Chayenu

An app for learning daily Torah study cycles.

Challenge

Chayenu is a Torah study booklet published weekly with over 22,000 subscribers in 35 countries. Each booklet contains thousands of lines of text from dozens of books and publishers.

Each publisher stored their content differently – some in InDesign, others in Word – with vast differences in formatting (bold, italics, spacing, headers) and breakup (chapter, section, page) etc.

Solution

We used sophisticated python scripts to extract content for each section, parsed data into a clean consistent MySQL database and built a web app for staff to manage content. For users we built native iOS & Android apps in Flutter and a web app in AngularJS.

Whats in the app?

The app has almost all the content of the print booklet and much more.

For example the print booklet only has 1 Chapter of Rambam per day but the app has both 1 Chapater and 3 Chapters sections.
